Dr. Stone's professional career began in basic research in the neurosciences, which he conducted for nearly 20 years at the University of Miami Medical School, The City of Hope, and the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. Beginning in 1991, Dr. Stone brought his combined expertise in both science and technology to the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he served as the Director of the Division of Extramural Inventions and Technology Resources within the Office of Extramural Research. There, Dr. Stone was instrumental in the design and introduction of several of the first secure, interactive Internet sites at NIH, enabling NIH to begin performing its research administration by electronic means.

Since retiring from NIH in 2002, Dr. Stone has pursued his passion to help advance renewable energy technology. He is a founding and managing partner of GreenStone Ventures, which engages in sustainable real estate development and invests in alternative energy projects. Successful projects include installation of a total of over 1 MW of solar power at sites in the mid-coast region of Maine, in Hopeland, California, and in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Most recently, GreenStone was selected to develop a sustainable mixed-use commercial/residential center in suburban Maryland to include approximately 500 kW of solar power. Dr. Stone is a graduate of University of California, Irvine.
